After a difficult second weekend at the Giro, the riders will be on rest day tomorrow. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Fenix) was part of the breakaway but in the final he gave in and finished at his own pace.
MVDP: “I wanted to be in the leading group to pass the mountains more easily and then climb at my own pace at the end of the stage. Overall it was a tough day. I am happy with my feelings
Am I looking forward to the last week? I don’t really know what to expect. It’s a whole new experience for me. I hope to have a few more good days yet. I see little chance of a stage victory, but as a rider, I hope to come out of this Giro stronger by finishing this last week. »
In the team bus, Mathieu van der Poel enjoyed a pizza after the stage, pointing out that pineapple was still missing, a sacrilege in Italy.
