With the next AirPods Pro, we don’t really know which foot to dance on. But these are the vagaries of early rumors. While we heard last week that Apple’s next headphones, AirPods Pro 2, could embrace USB-C technology for charging the case, Ming-Chi Kuo came to trample this hypothesis at full speed.
According to him and his sources close to Apple contractors, don’t expect to see a transition from Lightning to USB on AirPods Pro this year. He still maintains, like others, that before 2023, Apple should offer a new version of its AirPods Pro. But as you have understood, the protection and charging case would not change significantly from that currently on sale with the first generation AirPods Pro. In other words: the Lightning socket would always be appropriate.
What changes for the AirPods Pro 2, if not?
Behind the scenes, there will be a significant change regarding this new product. The AirPods Pro 2 should be mainly manufactured and assembled in Vietnam. When the production of the AirPods Pro first version takes place mainly in China. This change reflects Apple’s pressing desire to diversify its production areas with the idea of greatly reducing its dependence on Chinese channels. Indeed, the Californian firm is suffering from a big lack of stocks for many of its machines, due to the Coronavirus pandemic which is currently hitting the Middle Kingdom. Thus, several major Apple suppliers are producing in slow motion. Hence, moreover, extended delivery times for Macs.
Otherwise, the AirPods Pro 2 are expected with a new design of the earbuds and the integration of new health sensors. We know that the Cupertino engineers are working to add to the headphones enough to follow the heart rate of the wearer as well as the movements of the head. On the competition side, we have seen, at Honor in particular, headphones capable of monitoring the body temperature of the user.
Regarding the AirPods Pro 2 release window, the information currently available to us suggests that Apple should offer them for sale in the fall of 2022. Remember that the AirPods were renewed for the first time 3 years after the release of the very first generation, then a second time, 2 years later:
- AirPods 1: 2016
- AirPods 2: 2019
- AirPods 3: 2021
Thus, it is hard to imagine Apple waiting 4 years, and therefore 2023, to renew its AirPods Pro released in 2019.
Are you particularly looking forward to a new generation of AirPods Pro headphones? If so, with what new features?
