Buitoni pizzas responsible for several poisonings

The health authorities confirm the link between the bacterial poisoning of several children and the consumption of frozen pizzas Fraîch’Up.

The Fraîch’Up pizza factory ordered to cease operations

Presence of rodents, lack of maintenance and cleaning… The 1er April, the prefect of the North decided to stop production at the Buitoni factory in Caudry, where the pizzas contaminated with bacteria were made E.coli.

This measure follows two inspections, which revealed “a degraded level of food hygiene control”, according to the prefecture. The decree published the same day specifies that “these anomalies constitute a major source of microbiological, physical or chemical contamination of the foodstuffs handled in the establishment, which therefore present or are likely to present a danger to the health of consumers”.

The factory will not be able to resume its activity until it has complied with food hygiene.

Buitoni’s Fraîch’Up frozen pizzas are indeed the cause of several cases of poisoning by bacteria Escherichia coli. This is confirmed by the health authorities in a press release dated March 30, after carrying out analyzes “epidemiological, microbiological and traceability”.

Since the beginning of the year, 41 cases of haemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) caused by these coli bacteria have been identified in children in twelve French regions, in particular Hauts-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Pays de the Loire. Two children have died and several others are hospitalized in serious condition. Thirty additional cases are under investigation.

Pizzas removed from the shelves and recalled since March 18

Until now, the link with Fraîch’Up pizzas was not formally established. Suspicion hung over these pizzas after one was found in the freezer of a sick person. Buitoni had, as a precautionary measure, proceeded on March 18 to withdraw from the shelves and remind customers of all the pizzas in its Fraîch’Up range marketed since June 2021.

Fraîch’Up is the only range of frozen raw dough pizzas sold by the Nestlé subsidiary. This type of product requires much longer cooking than a classic frozen pizza, as we explained in our March 21 article Colibacills: infections due to pizza dough?

Photograph your Fraîch’Up and destroy them

Now, the alert is reinforced: “Anyone who holds Buitoni Fraîch’Up frozen pizzas is invited not to consume them and to destroy them”, insists the government.

If you have some at home, Buitoni suggests that you take a photo of the packaging with the product references (date of minimum durability, barcode number, batch number) then call consumer service on 0800 22 32 42 in order to get a refund.

Beware of unidentifiable frozen pizzas!

Health authorities also recommend that people who have it in their freezer destroy all frozen pizzas. “having been separated from their box, and whose range and brand cannot be formally identified or clearly known”.

If you have no symptoms in the fifteen days following this consumption, there is no need to worry, underline the health authorities.

On the other hand, it is important to consult a doctor quickly if:

  • within 10 days, you experience diarrhoea, abdominal pain or vomiting;
  • within 15 days, you show signs of great fatigue, pallor, or a decrease in the volume of urine, which becomes darker.
