New gestures coming to the Apple Pencil 3?

Apple may add the ability to recognize gestures such as swiping in a future version of the Apple Pencil. The tech giant has been granted a patent (number 11,340,716) for “touch-based input for a stylus”.

The story of the Apple Pencil 2

The Apple Pencil 2 was introduced in October 2018 and released in early November. In today’s patent application, an update to an earlier document, some of the features of Apple Pencil 2 are discussed, such as a flat edge to accommodate its new charging format and, to some extent, the double tap function that allows you to switch between tools.

As with many inventions, Apple engineers give a preview of the device being developed. While some features are already on the second generation of the stylus, others will likely come to Apple Pencil 3.

In the patent filing spotted by Apple World, Apple notes that a stylus can be used to provide input information by touching a touch panel of an electronic device such as an iPad. The display may include a touch sensitive surface which, in response to sensing a touch event, generates a signal which may be processed and used by other components of the tablet. Apple wants users to be able to move the tip of an Apple Pencil across the touchscreen in a pattern that the system translates into a specific gesture. Better still, the stylus could send a gesture performed on itself such as a swipe or a rotation to trigger other actions.

Here is the summary of the patent presented by Apple:

Touch input devices, such as a stylus, can receive touch input from a user. Input functions can be performed by a sensor, such as a capacitive sensing device. A touch sensor can be integrated into a stylus in a low profile form.

Touch input may be received at the natural location of the user’s grip. Further, the stylus can effectively discriminate between a user’s touch inputs and ignore sustained touch inputs that are provided while the user is simply holding the stylus at the natural grip location.

What’s new on the Apple Pencil 3?

Besides gesture recognition, Apple has filed various patents involving new features for an Apple Pencil for three years, such as:

  • The ability to sample colors;
  • The ability to provide unique tactile sensations;
  • iPhone and Apple Watch support;
  • Mac support.

Having tested the Apple Pencil 2 in writing, we can only be impatient at the idea of discovering the new generation, why not with the iPad Pro 2022 or the iPad Pro 2023. The Apple Pencil 2 costs 129€.
